Stables: Beautiful Paddocks, Horse Barns, and Tack Rooms

From the private to the historic to the state-of-the-art, a lavish tour of some of the most notable stables in the country. A celebration of horses and their "lodgings," this exquisite book covers horse country across the United States—from the East Coast to the Bluegrass, the prairie and mountain ranches, and to the Pacific Coast—and traces the origins of twenty-five stunning stables, from their vernacular beginnings in the early nineteenth century to the contemporary designs of today. Included are a farm in the countryside near Saratoga Springs, New York, which bears an 1830s-constructed main barn that originally housed draft horses and now accommodates retired race horses turned polo ponies, and a world-renowned Arabian horse-breeding farm in Santa Ynez Valley, California, that resembles a spa and country club with Mediterranean-style architecture and landscaping and has in the stable courtyard a stone fountain reminiscent of the ubiquitous waterworks in Moorish palaces. Uniquely spectacular, each selection is a reflection of its regional heritage. Featuring all-new color photography, Stables showcases the best of America’s diverse equine homes—a must-have for any horse or architecture enthusiast.

South Tacoma (WA) (Images of America)

Nestled snuggly against Lakewood on the southern side of Tacoma, South Tacoma is a vibrant neighborhood comprised of old and new. What was once a prairie where elk and deer roamed was first called Excelsior, later renamed Edison, and finally became known as South Tacoma in 1895. Beginning in the mid-1800s, the area was comprised of cemeteries used to bury Tacoma's deceased, but in 1890, Northern Pacific Railway made the monumental decision to move its railroad shops from downtown Tacoma to this prime prairie land south of the city. The community has evolved since these beginnings into a contemporary, vital addition to the city of Tacoma. Boasting third-, fourth-, and fifth-generation families and many family-owned businesses, South Tacoma is a small city within a big city, and its citizens are committed to maintaining its unique character for posterity.

1963 Shelby Cobra

1963 Shelby Cobra

Sold $467,500

Chassis no. CSX2080
The fifth 289 Cobra built, CSX 2080 was purchased new from Mallon Motors (Tacoma, WA) by David Goodsen in October of 1964. Four years later Goodsen had the Cobra repainted, he also added a hood scoop and headers from Shelby Automotive, and side louvers from AC Cars to assist with cooling. He kept exceptional records and everything has been documented in a binder which will be available for viewing at the auction. Goodsen sold CSX 2080 for $20,000 in 1978 with just over 60,000 miles to a dealer in Arizona. Shortly thereafter it was sold to Jim Southard, the dealer responsible for creating the first Cobra craze. The next owner, contrary to the SAAC Registry was not William Thaygard (Marathon, FL). CSX 2080 was acquired by Carl Lee Windham in 1981 after he borrowed $30,000 in gold coins from his father (albeit to some objection) which he traded for the Cobra.

Discovered complete with its original drivetrain, dashboard, wire wheels, air cleaner, carburetor, and intake manifold, this 289 Cobra also sports most of it original carpeting and carries its original seats as well as its original top and tonneau cover. The engine bay remains virtually untouched and features its original relays and wiring harness. Also included are original factory side curtains, an original factory hardtop, and an original owners manual. In order to make the car road ready, a new radiator and hoses have been added, and a complete mechanical restoration has been performed with close attention paid to preserving its original condition.

CSX 2080 is a true “barn find” matching numbers example, that is now in excellent running and driving condition and benefits from having only two private owners from new. Parked since 1981, it has only recently resurfaced and shows just over 68,000 original miles. It remains an exceptional example with a well documented history and as such we invite a closer inspection of what could be one of the last true “barn find” Cobras.

Tacoma's Wright Park (WA) (Images of America) (Images of America (Arcadia Publishing))

The origins of Wright Park date to 1886, when the Tacoma Land Company the real estate agency of the Northern Pacific Railway donated 27 acres of land to the newly incorporated and booming young railroad town of Tacoma on the condition that it become a city park. A hilly, logged, and brambly parcel of land, the acreage was nonetheless enthusiastically received by citizens of Tacoma. Named in honor of Charles Barstow Wright, the president of the Tacoma Land Company, Wright Park and its surrounding streets and avenues soon became the early address of distinction for Tacoma's grand residences as well as many educational, religious, and medical institutions. Now, more than a century later, Tacoma's landmark Wright Park is the recipient of renewed citizen investment and appreciation, as this photographic retrospective demonstrates.

Poppy Cafe: Now Open for Business! Red Carpet Rolled Out...Come and Dine!

Poppy Cafe: Now Open for Business! Red Carpet Rolled Out...Come and Dine!

An oriental poppy in my garden just opened up for business! See the abundance and fullness of pollen for the bees? It reminds me of the great catch of fishes in this Bible narrative and of Jesus invitation to "Come and dine." He has bread and fish already cooking. It's like the Word of God which is likened to meat or bread as well.
This story is after Jesus rose from the dead and the disciples do not know Him at first.
Come and dine on the feast of the Word, taste and see that the Lord is good!

John 21:1-14
1 After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself. 2 There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples. 3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing. 4 But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. 5 Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No. 6 And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes. 7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea. 8 And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes. 9 As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread. 10 Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught. 11 Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken. 12 Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise. 14 This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.

It is also disease resistant, a repeat bloomer and has a slight fragrance. It's leaves have proven to have excellent disease resistance in a difficult location where that the Red Flower Carpet Rose that was previously planted in the same spot was totally defoliated because of foliar diseases at the same time of year that this picture was taken. We have had some spider mite damage to the foliage, but no disease damage. Sam Bahr, photographer

Special Forces Sniper Training and Employment

Special Forces Sniper Training and Employment

This field manual (FM) provides doctrinal guidance on the mission, personnel,
organization, equipment, training, skills, and employment of the Special Forces
(SF) sniper. It describes those segments of sniping that are unique to SF soldiers and those portions of conventional sniping that are necessary to train indigenous forces. It is intended for use by commanders, staffs, instructors, and soldiers at training posts, United States (U.S.) Army schools, and units.

Take a look at the sample for this book and for details about downloading 500 free US military manuals as a thank you for taking the time to look at our book.

FM 3-05.222 (formerly TC 31-32) addresses three distinct audiences:
• Commanders. It provides specific guidance on the nature, role, candidate
selection, organization, and employment of sniper personnel.
• Trainers. It provides a reference for developing training programs.
• Snipers. It contains detailed information on the fundamental knowledge,
skills, and employment methods of snipers throughout the entire
operational continuum.

The most common measurements that the sniper uses are expressed throughout the text and in many cases are U.S. standard terms rather than metric. Appendix A consists of conversion tables that may be used when mission requirements or environments change.

This true story comes at a time when our nation has divided feelings and opinions about this war a division that exists among both government leaders and the American people. These pages offer a different perspective that of lower enlisted soldiers reflecting their personal experience in combat zones in Africa and Afghanistan as they witnessed and experienced the fog of war. The author Special Forces Master Sergeant Regulo Zapata, Jr. shares his extraordinary journey through ancient and desperate lands at the front lines of this ongoing war. Here are true stories of sacrifice, bravery, excitement, horror, anger, tedium, fear, camaraderie, and more a firsthand look behind the headlines at the reality of the exceptional and difficult challenges U.S. Army Special Forces soldiers face as they defend America against the terrorist threat.

Eureka 3670G Mighty Mite Canister Vacuum

carpetcleaning
The Eureka 3670G Mighty Mite canister vacuum is a sleek new compact canister that makes bare floor cleaning easy. This lightweight canister vacuum weighs less than 9 pounds and gives its customers value for money. While it does well on carpets or rugs, it is ideal for vacuuming bare floors, wood floors and tiles. This small canister vacuum is extremely easy to carry and is appreciated for its maneuverability. The 20 foot power cord with quick release allows you to take it with you wherever you go. Storage is never a problem because of its compact size.

Lightweight & Mighty

The Mighty Mite canister vacuum is equipped with powerful brush rolls to deep clean carpets and a full set of tools are provided for specialty cleaning such as stairs and upholstery. This canister vacuum can pick up dust and pet hair easily. It has also made cleaning the insides of a car more convenient as it sucks up dirt and other small particles from under the seats as well as the sides.

Ideal for vacuuming quickly and efficiently

Equipped with a 12 amp motor, this canister vacuum not only creates powerful suction but also makes cleaning quick and efficient. The onboard tools such as the crevice tool, upholstery nozzle/dusting brush and carpet/bare floor nozzle provide easier access to even the hard to reach areas. 2 extension wands also help clean the drapes and pull out cob webs from the ceilings. This bagged canister vacuum includes a triple filtration bag system. The vacuum comes with a limited 1 year warranty.

Getting the Best Results
• Connect the hose to the front of the canister and attach the wands to the hose handle. Extend the telescopic wand by pushing lock button down and pulling on the wand until reaching desired height.

• Adjust to maximum suction by closing the slip ring on the hose handle. Attach combination tool, crevice tool and turbo nozzle to the end of the hose. If additional reach is needed, place the wand on the hose handle first.

• To use the blower port, detach hose from the front side of the canister and attach it to the blower port on the back side of the canister.

• The dust bag and motor filter play a very important role in the efficiency of the vacuum cleaner. If the bag or the motor filter becomes clogged, no air can pass through the cleaner and no cleaning can take place no matter how powerful the unit is. To keep the cleaner operating at maximum efficiency, change the dust bag frequently and clean the filter as needed.

• Some fine particles can restrict the airflow very quickly and will decrease performance even before the bag appears to be full. For that reason, when vacuuming carpet fresheners or cleaners, powder, plaster dust or similar fine substances, the bag and filter may need to be changed more often.
